We passed through Jeddah on our way to Makkah in a taxi. Saudi Arabia seems like a two tiered society comprised of the very rich and the poor. The oil sheikhs have their mansions but the ordinary man doesn’t seem to measure up.
The country at best is second world and in some areas bordering on the third. City infrastructure is basic, seemingly unable but yet capable to cope with the millions of pilgrims making their way from around the globe.
Having lived in Dubai, the same public investment that has turned it into a desert oasis is definitely lacking in Saudi Arabia. The trickle down effect of the oil boom is non-existent leaving one to wonder as to the corruption levels in the government.
you should switch to google reader. Bloglines’ okay…but google reader’s waaay better.
